California’s state climatologist issued a statement today cautioning that an El Niño winter this year is far from certain and even if a wet winter were to arrive it likely would not end the state’s drought.

“California cannot count on potential El Niño conditions to halt or reverse drought conditions,’ State Climatologist Michael Anderson said in a prepared statement. “Historical weather data shows us that at best, there is a 50/50 chance of having a wetter winter.
